National Apprenticeship Week

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I always wanted to pursue a career in finance.  This opportunity presented the chance for me to learn and work at the same time…and to get some real hands on experience.

What did you expect and has it been what you expected?
Yes, as expected really.  There is a lot of evidencing required, where I need to present examples of my day to day work that demonstrate my understanding of the subject. It’s great that I am able to link my learning to my role. As part of this, my writing and reporting skills are developing nicely.

How have you juggled your learning and work effectively?
The main discipline is time management…a skill that I am getting much better at as I progress through my Apprenticeship.  Continuous feedback, from my manager and Coach, and hitting milestones in my ongoing learning keep me on track and they are excellent motivators for me.

What now? Next steps?
I am currently completing a portfolio of work for submission at the end of this stage of my Apprenticeship. This will, hopefully, pave the way for me to continue as an Apprentice on the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) path, a three-year course that will be based on a continuous case study of my role at HB Projects.

What are the key benefits you have experienced, thanks to an apprenticeship?
My Apprenticeship has helped me to learn the job, not just pass an exam.  The ongoing ‘learning whilst working approach’ has enabled me to become more confident in my own ability. It’s been a great stepping stone for me to progress to the next stage in my development.

Would you recommend apprenticeships to others? If so, why?
Yes. It has been great for me.  I feel like I have come a long way, but I can also see a long way ahead.  I look forward to continuing to embed my knowledge and learning into my role whilst working towards the next level of qualifications and pay grade. I feel an Apprenticeship gives you a great balance…work, learning and experience.
